Sometimes the warning signs of a virus, malware, or spyware are obvious but often are subtle. Clues that you might have a virus include if you have recently downloaded software and now have unwanted programs and/or pop-ups or if your email contacts have alerted you that they are receiving spam from your email address.
One of the biggest and fastest growing cyber threats facing business and personal computers today is the ransom for digital files. Ransomware is a virus that encrypts a computer system’s files in exchange for money. This attack most commonly happens through email but can also happen through malicious websites. A recommended prevention is to not click on emails or attachments from unknown sources. Even more important than prevention is having a backup system in place. Another common threat is a browser pop-up tech support scam. During regular internet browsing a pop-up may appear on your screen informing you that your computer is infected with a virus (your computer likely is not infected) and instruct you to call ‘Microsoft’ with a supplied 800-number to have it fixed. Never call an 800-number offering support and/or give your credit card information. Microsoft, or its affiliates, will never prompt you to contact them in that fashion to repair a virus-infected computer. These are criminals masquerading as Microsoft. If you have this type of notification on your screen, restart your computer. If the problem persists, call us.
It is critical to maintain up-to-date anti-virus software on your computer. With so many anti-virus software programs on the market, both free and paid, it can be confusing to know what will be most effective. We are happy to help find the best protection to suit your needs.
Having a reliable and comprehensive backup solution is also vitally important in circumventing the negative effects of virus attacks. Click here for more about system backups.
